As featured on Variety, The New York Times, BBC and more, SOUFRA follows the inspirational story of an intrepid social entrepreneur, Mariam Shaar – a refugee who has spent her entire life in the 69-year-old Burl El Barajneh refugee camp south of Beirut, Lebanon. The film follows Mariam and a diverse team of fellow refugee women who share the camp as their home as they set out to change their fate by launching a catering company, “Soufra,” and then expanding its reach outside the camp with a food truck business. Together, they heal the wounds of war through the unifying power of food while taking their future into their own hands.

🎨 ABOUT CHERIE
––––––––––––––––––
Drawing thought bubbles, splashing colours, stringing words and doodling between paintings. Cherie Altea is a painter who writes and lives in Singapore. She has been making art all her life and tried being a working artist since she finished her BA Psychology in 1997. In 2002, she became a professional part-time artist beginning with a small exhibit in a cafe up in the mountains of Baguio City, Philippines. More than half of the works were sold. Since then, she has worn many hats and juggled several jobs to support her fledgeling art career on the side. 20 years of trying meant 20 years of rejection, including a 5-year creative block. No one really noticed Cherie’s work until she started sharing her raw creative journey on Instagram in 2015. She celebrated turning 40 in 2017 with a sold-out exhibit opening here in Singapore, her first solo gallery show.

Today, 63 artworks are seen every single day by collectors and their families and continue to spark joy in 50 homes and offices across the globe, with 29 of those sold and shipped out between 2017-2018. These artworks are found in New York, Pittsburgh, Arizona, Singapore, Koh Samui, Manila, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Vancouver, Atherton, Sydney, Bath, and Bahrain. She drew a lot of nothing but made so much of it until one day, all that nothing became something. Colouring outside the lines completely changed her life, as a person and as an artist. What she does and who she is today is a result of resilience, second chances and a commitment to show up and do the work.

Laura Francois is a social impact strategist, environmental creative and entrepreneur. Laura has facilitated impact projects across India, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam, Egypt and Canada, focusing on collaboratively designing circular economy models and dedicated to exploring new ways of thinking about systemic environmental problems through storytelling, technology and design.

Previously, Laura founded impact design agency, ANEWKIND and Clothing The Loop, experiential storytelling on sustainable fashion with over 1M views, directed global non-profit Fashion Revolution in both Malaysia and Singapore and co-founded Majority-World artisan marketplace, Artisan & Fox. Laura connects the dots between creativity, social impact and the environment and has been featured on BBC News, Forbes, TedX and The Disruptive Design Festival.
